Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. announces Heather Garay has been appointed to serve on the Board of Public Works for the City of Hammond. Ms. Garay will replace Edward Krusa who has served on the Board since May 2014.

The Board of Public Works is responsible for the public safety and control of the public rights-of-way which includes digging requests, cable, street and alley closures, street solicitations, and requests for street signs. It serves as an appeal board for the appeal of late rental registration applications and grants garage sale/yard sale permits. It has the exclusive control over all matters and property dealing with the police and fire departments and it is the contracting arm of the executive branch which includes all purchasing for the public works, all street projects, gasoline and vehicles.
Heather has been with the City since 2008, interning in the Mayor’s office, serving on the Hammond Human Relations Commission and Hammond Water Works Department Board of Directors; in 2014 she became the City Controller.

Ms. Garay graduated Northern Illinois College of Law with a JD and was admitted to the Bar in 2009. She completed her undergraduate work at Valparaiso University and studied abroad at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy.

“I am confident Heather will be a tremendous asset to the Board of Public Works,” stated Mayor McDermott.
