Hammond Animal Control is operated by the Hammond Police Department.

It is the duty of Animal Control to coordinate and promote the adoption of abandoned animals, and to house stray and unwanted animals in a clean and safe environment. Hammond Animal Control provides 24-hour service for injured, stray animals, enforces animal welfare laws, investigates complaints of cruelty to animals, and quarantines stray animals that have bitten humans. The Animal Control Department tends to domestic animals only, and more specifically dogs and cats. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) maintains responsibility of tending to non-domesticated animals and wildlife. Animal Control will, however, see to the removal of animal remains of all types (including wildlife) from public areas. If you are aware of illegal activities involving animals of any type, please call Animal Control immediately!
