Mayor Thomas M. McDermott is proud to announce the promotion of William “Bill” Lewter to the position of Code Enforcement Commissioner, effective immediately. A dedicated public servant with over 15 years of service to the city and a lifelong Hammond resident, Lewter brings a wealth of experience, resilience, and community commitment to his new leadership role.
Lewter has called Hammond home for 42 years. Throughout his career with the city, he has served in multiple capacities — beginning in the 911 dispatch center, moving into code enforcement, and most recently working as a Building Inspector. His extensive, hands-on experience across departments has equipped him with a deep understanding of the city’s operations and the needs of its residents.
In addition to his professional achievements, Lewter is a cancer survivor — a testament to his strength and perseverance both in life and in service. He and his wife are proud parents of two children and remain active members of the local community.
“Bill’s promotion is not only a recognition of his professional accomplishments, but also of his character and dedication to Hammond,” said McDermott “He brings not only expertise but heart to everything he does.”
As Code Enforcement Commissioner, Lewter will oversee the city’s efforts to ensure compliance with municipal codes and ordinances, with a focus on neighborhood preservation, property standards, and public engagement.
Please join Mayor McDermott and The City of Hammond in congratulating William “Bill” Lewter on this new leadership position and thanking him for his continued service.
