Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., has announced that due to the extreme cold expected this week, the City of Hammond has identified several buildings as warming centers, including:
- The Jean Shepherd Center, 3031 J.F. Mahoney Dr, Hammond, IN 46323
- The Hammond Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Ave, Hammond, IN 46320
- The Hammond Sportsplex, 6630 Indianapolis Blvd, Hammond, IN 46323
Individuals may use these facilities during regular operating hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. if necessary to get out of the cold. In the case of a city wide power outage these locations would be open 24 hours.
It is important for everyone to check in on their neighbors, especially senior citizens who are most adversely affected by the extreme cold. Neighborly care can go a long way in avoiding a tragic situation from occurring.
