Mayor McDermott Issues Executive Order Regarding Transition of Hammond City Court

Executive Order 17-01

Whereas, Approved by the the Hammond Common Council was an Ordinance concerning the orderly transition of cases from the Hammond City Court to the Lake Superior Court; and

Whereas, The Mayor of the City of Hammond, as chief executive may by executive order exercise any executive power granted to him by law and statute; and

Whereas, The Hammond Police Department, by its Chief, is under the authority and control of the executive branch;

THERFORE, Thomas M. McDermott, Mayor and Chief Executive of the City of Hammond, now issues the following Executive Order;

As of January 1, 2017 all criminal misdemeanor charges brought by the Hammond Police Department are to be filed in the Lake Superior Court system.

As of January 1, 2017, a uniform police officer will no longer be assigned to the Hammond City Court without charge, and the Hammond City Court will be responsible for compensation of the Court Officer.

This Executive Order shall supersede any previously established ordinance, Executive Order, handbook or policy of the City of Hammond.

This Executive Order shall go into effect upon signing.
