Kennedy Avenue Closure Due to Emergency Sewer Work

CATEGORY: Engineering, News

The City of Hammond and the Hammond Sanitary District wishes to inform residents and motorists of the closing of Kennedy Avenue immediately south of Michigan Street/US 20 in Hammond beginning 7:00 am Friday, April 27, 2018 for an undetermined length of time. Currently, there are restricted lanes on Kennedy and the ramps from US 20 to Kennedy are closed at this time. Crews are working to determine the exact location of the sewer break which requires all four lanes of Kennedy Avenue and the Michigan Street/US 20 on and off ramps to remain closed until further notice.

“We are asking motorists to avoid the area until further notice because of the extent of the apparent sewer failure. We are working closely with our contractors, local utility partners and state agencies to limit the extent of the impact to all involved,” said Dean Button, Hammond City Engineer. “We will reopen the roadway as soon as possible.”

The work is located at the 5800 block of Kennedy, approximately one-mile north of 165th Street in Hammond.
