Job Requirements:
- Must have valid CDL license and be insurable
- Able to lift and pull 50 pounds
- Able to climb in and out of various trucks and vehicles to pick up junk, pull garbage cans to truck, and perform patching duties
- Able to walk behind trucks to collect leaf bags and dump residential garbage cans
- Able to squat, bend, push and pull
- Able to sit for long hours
- Able to lift over head
- Able to operate power equipment (lawnmowers, chainsaws, blowers, weed whackers, etc.)
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions
- Able to legally operate all departmental vehicles
- Able to perform basic maintenance of large trucks
- Knowledge of city streets and alleys
- Knowledge of departmental operations and safety rules and regulations
- Required to join union in 30 days – probationary period is 90 days
- Will be on call for emergency weather conditions
Job Duties:
- Able to work in all weather conditions
- Responsible for light maintenance of truck
- Responsible for completing vehicle daily checklist
- Responsible for vehicle upkeep (washing and cleaning inside and out)
- Drives packer type truck and collects refuse from scheduled routes
- Cleanout back of packer truck daily
- Operates hoisting device from back of truck
- Pickup of lawn bags
- Pickup of items from residentials
- Patch potholes around the city
- Cutting/weed whacking parks and city owned property
- Snow plow city streets
- Performs other duties as required
Hiring will be done in accordance with Hammond City Ordinance #8620 as it pertains to the residency requirement.
Position will be posted internally from October 6, 2026 thru October 13, 2026. If the position is not filled internally it will be held open for external applications an additional ten (10) days. The position will remain posted until filled or no more than 10 days.
