The City of Hammond in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Transportation began the reconstruction of Gostlin Street from the Indiana-Illinois state line to Sheffield and Sheffield Avenue from Gostlin to Marble Street. The $10 million Chicago Street Reconstruction Project includes a new roundabout at Sheffield Avenue and Gostlin Street designed for truck traffic, widened Gostlin Street, new curbs, sidewalks, roadways, and utilities as well as the demolition of the Ardillo’s building at the southeast corner of Gostlin and Sheffield to make way for the new roundabout. Overhead and underground utility relocations and building demolition begin now. The project is expected to be completed in October 2021. (concept renderings attached)

“This is the third segment of our Chicago Street Project that previously included demolition of a number of homes on the south side of Gostlin to make way for the widened street,” said Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. “The project is adjacent to the proposed Hammond Gateway Station at what is currently Hanover Street and Wabash Avenue, linking the South Shore and Westlake extensions by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), and thereby making a fundamental change to north Hammond,” said Mayor McDermott. “Homeowners displaced by the Project who subsequently purchased homes in Hammond were granted $5,000 each due to property acquisition by the City through our Hammond Is My Home Program,” said Mayor McDermott.

Grimmer Construction of Highland, Indiana is the general contractor and American StructurePoint with an office in Highland is the consulting engineer in design and construction observation. The project is funded 80 percent from the Federal Highway Administration through the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) and 20 percent local funds.

Concurrently, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad are working cooperatively with the City of Hammond to improve the IHB railroad crossing west of the Indiana-Illinois state line that is expected to close Gostlin Street from Monday, April 13, 2020, for 7 days ending April 19, 2020. During this period, our Contractor is planning to complete certain utility work to take advantage of the overall detour.

The final phase of the Chicago Street Project between Sheffield and Marble Street to Chicago at Torrance Avenue is expected to begin in March 2021.
