Hammond, Indiana Commits to Join AARP’s Network of Age Friendly States and Communities
The City of Hammond has taken an important first step toward becoming a more age-friendly community by committing to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. This national program supports cities and states as they work to create environments that are safe, inclusive, and supportive for residents of all ages especially older adults.
Joining the AARP Network signals Hammond’s commitment to listening to its residents and planning intentionally for the future as the population continues to age. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2034 there will be more Americans aged 65 and older than those under 18, making it more important than ever for communities to prepare for the needs of older adults.
As part of this initial phase, the City of Hammond will be launching a community survey within the next few weeks to gather input directly from seniors and residents age 45 and older. The survey will ask participants to share their experiences living in Hammond and provide feedback on what they believe the City can do to better support older adults.
Survey responses will help guide future planning efforts and identify priorities across key areas such as housing, transportation, outdoor spaces, communication, social inclusion, health services, and community support. Community input will play a critical role in shaping the City’s next steps as it moves forward in the age-friendly process.
More information about the survey, including how to participate, will be shared soon. Residents are encouraged to take part and help ensure Hammond continues to be a city where people can live comfortably, safely, and independently at every stage of life.
