The City of Hammond has received a recent influx of complaints regarding inconsistent or missed recycling pickup. In response, the mayor’s office met with representatives from Republic Services to address these concerns and work toward a solution.
The meeting was very productive, and the city believes the underlying issues affecting recycling pickup have been addressed. Recycling is very important to Mayor McDermott and he wants to ensure that residents continue to receive reliable service while also making the recycling program as effective as possible.
Residents may notice an orange sticker or hanging tag placed on their recycling bin. These notices will explain why your recycling bin was not collected. One of the most common reasons a recycling bin may not be emptied is contamination. A contaminated recycling bin means that items have been placed in the recycling bin that should be in the garbage. This may prevent the entire load from being picked up by Republic.

The City and Mayor McDermott encourage residents to continue to use the Hammond 311 app to report any missed recycling pickups. Reporting missed pickups through the app will help us maintain an accurate record of service issues and work effectively with Republic Services to address them.
