Principal Function

The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for managing and maintaining the City’s social media presence across multiple platforms. This position develops engaging digital content, manages public communication efforts, and promotes organizational initiatives through social media and other digital channels. The Social Media Coordinator creates platform-specific content for services such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X (Twitter) while helping ensure accurate, timely, professional communication with the public, and all other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Create, schedule, and publish content across social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X (Twitter).
  2. Develop engaging short-form video content, reels, stories, graphics, photos, and written posts tailored to specific social media platforms and audiences.
  3. Record, edit, and produce TikTok and Instagram video content highlighting organizational services, events, projects, programs, and community engagement efforts.
  4. Writes and edits copy for websites and other digital media channels.
  5. Conducts ongoing content audits of social media accounts and monitor for comments, messages, and public engagement and respond or escalate issues appropriately.
  6. Assists Multimedia Coordinator with live streams, AV, and tech support for City of Hammond events.
  7. Communicates with and between all city offices/departments, as needed.
  8. Attends all meetings, conferences, training sessions, etc., as required.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and Bachelor’s degree (B.S./B.A.) in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, Digital Media, or related field required. One to three years of experience managing social media accounts, creating digital content, or supporting communications efforts preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Previous social media experience is required. Previous social media experience in a municipality or government-related job is desired.

Other Skills and Abilities

The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • Computer software skills required include: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to learn municipality-specific software within a reasonable timeframe is desired.
  • A general knowledge of Final Cut Pro, OBS, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, as well as a proficiency with HTML, CSS, and WordPress is required.
  • A general knowledge of Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads.
  • A general knowledge of web development and photography principles and practices is required.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of social media channels, webcasting platforms, and contact management software is required.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of video production tools and techniques and the ability to shoot and edit video for the worldwide web is required.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of video, audio, and lighting equipment.
  • A general knowledge of copyright laws is required.
  • A general understanding of federal and state laws as they relate to multimedia, municipalities, and reporting is required.
  • A general understanding of City of Hammond policies and procedures as they relate to multimedia and information technology is required.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of all municipal operations within the City of Hammond is required.
  • The ability to maintain and cultivate positive relationship with the public, vendors and other City of Hammond departments is required.
  • The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.
  • The ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment while providing exceptional customer service is required.
  • The ability to recognize confidential information and to keep that information confidential as required by state statutes and internal office processes, procedures, and guidelines is required.
  • The ability remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.
  • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, calculator, and other office equipment is required.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to working near mechanical parts and electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to working in high precarious places, and outdoor weather conditions when traveling outside of the department. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The Mayor’s Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and this job may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends and on holidays, as needed. The job also requires that the employee be on-call and then called-in to work, as needed. Employee will be required to drive City of Hammond vehicles or their own vehicle to jobsites and events. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required and employee must be able to be insured by the city.

Hiring will be done in accordance with Hammond City Ordinance #8620 as it pertains to the residency requirement.
Position will be posted internally only, from May 28, 2026 thru June 3, 2026. If the position is not filled internally it will be held open for external applications an additional ten (10) days. The position will remain posted until filled or no more than 10 days.
