JOB POSTING: Laborer

Job Requirements:

• Ability to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds and strenuous work
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions by senior person on site
• Ability to use a variety hand and power tools
• Able to legally operate motor vehicles (CDL – tanker endorsement preferred)
• Must have a valid Indiana driver’s license and be insurable
• Knowledge of safety rules and procedures
• Graduate from high school or GED equivalent
• Must attend and comply with all HSD/SM training courses
• Must pass drug screen
• Required to join union in 30 days – probationary period is 90 days
• Must be a Hammond or Munster resident

Job Responsibilities:

• Must be able to use shovel, jackhammer, demolition saws and all other equipment for assigned task
• Mix mortar, stack brick and block for bricklayer
• Shovel and pick up debris excavated from job site
• Must comply with all HSD policies
• Subject to 24-hour call out for repair work and during rain events
• Restoration of ground and street
• Perform related duties as required

Responsibility:

Incumbent is supervised continually. Specific work assignments are received daily.
Standard work procedures are followed to complete all tasks.

Physical Effort:

Prolonged strenuous work and heavy lifting are required to move and carry materials and
equipment used in the maintenance and repair of sewers.

Working Conditions:

Incumbent will work outside in all kinds of weather and is exposed to biological hazards,
dangerous gases, dust, dirt, grease, heavy traffic and other physical hazards.

Schedule:

Monday through Friday – 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with weekends off.
