Urban Forestry Management Plan

Hammond's Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) assessment shows that trees currently cover approximately 16% of the city (2,496 acres), an indicator of signifcant opportunity for improvement. Analysis identifes a maximum potential canopy of 40% (6,160 acres), with 24% of the city (3,664 acres) classifed as preferred plantable area suitable for long-term tree establishment. To expand canopy cover, the City of Hammond should plant at least two trees for every tree removed, or at least 500 trees annually. These fndings highlight an opportunity to expand canopy, preserve existing trees, and enhance environmental, public health, and quality-of-life outcomes through sustained urban forestry investment.
