Job Requirements

  • Coordinate and execute all special events for the Park Department and/or the City of Hammond
  • Coordinate all internal and external advertising for the City of Hammond activities and events
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of AP news style writing
  • Ability to speak publicly in front of small or large groups
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public as well as internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures
  • Supervise and manage all Park Department employees when needed/necessary
  • Ability to successfully manage a large group of workers and large meetings
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and stay organized
  • Assist the Mayor’s Office with public relations projects
  • Represent the City of Hammond on certain boards and committees as needed
  • Ability to understand fiscal responsibility by planning and working with a budget
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, Publisher)
  • Must have active social media knowledge
  • Ability to maintain various social networking sites (FaceBook, Twitter, etc.) and identify new media as needed
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

Job Duties

  • Coordinate and facilitate the “Mayor’s Night Out” program
  • Write and edit internal and external communications including press releases, media blasts, editorials, letters, brochures, website content water bill insert or others as assigned
  • Represent the Mayor during public speaking engagements as needed
  • Coordinate and facilitate all matters related to the annual Festival of the Lakes
  • Coordinate and facilitate the following events
    • 219 Day
    • Hammond Cinco de Mayo event
    • Hammond Veteran Appreciation Day Parade
    • Hammond Holiday Parade
    • Hammond employee holiday party
    • Other Park Department/citywide events as needed
  • Solicit sponsorship monies for events
  • Act as the City of Hammond liaison to other entities hosting events in the City
  • Help attract new programs and events to the City of Hammond
  • Coordinate all events at Civic Center that require alcoholic beverages: ordering product, hiring bartenders, etc.
  • Immediate assistant to the Park Department Administrator on all issues
  • Actively promote events for City of Hammond organizations (DHC, HC3, HPL, Department of Planning and Development, Port Authority)
  • Performs other duties as required
Hiring will be done in accordance with Hammond City Ordinance #8620 as it pertains to the residency requirement.
Position will be posted internally from September 21, 2021 thru September 27, 2021. If the position is not filled internally, it will be held open for external applications an additional ten (10) days. The position will remain posted until filled or no more than 10 days.
