Job Requirements:
- Ability to follow daily instructions from supervisor and/or truck driver on duties to be performed
- Ability to use shovel and simple hand and air tools
- Ability to lift and move moderate to heavy loads
- Ability to climb to various heights as required by the job
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Must pass drug screen
- 90-day probation period
Job Responsibilities:
Incumbent must be able to perform all duties:
- Dig holes for shut off, turn on, repair or installation of water mains and services
- Dig holes for installation, removal and repair of fire hydrants
- Assists in the loading and unloading of the truck
- Assists in keeping trucks and tools clean and organized
- Operates necessary equipment such as air compressor, hoist, tamper, and jackhammer
- Assists in snow removal around the shop
- Cleans and maintains the garage, distribution office and grounds area
- Maintains elevated storage tanks
- Maintains grass, shrubs, and tank yards
- Assists in/or installs/removes water meters
- Assists in locating buffalo boxes and service lines
- Periodically flushes fire hydrants throughout the city
- Assists in necessary repairs and maintenance on/around fire hydrants
- Assists in the restoration of streets and parkways from previous work crews
- Operates hand tools
- Assists in repair of service lines, water mains, and valves
- Responsible for whereabouts and condition of issued work clothing and safety items i.e. boots, rain clothing, safety glasses, hard hats
- Required to work 50% of available overtime between April 1 and November 30; required to work 75% of available overtime between December 1 and March 3; must respond to the phone number provided by supervisor
- Performs related duties as required
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Incumbent is frequently digging, walking, climbing, stooping or lifting. Incumbent may work in damp, dirty, and sometimes odor filled environments. Incumbent may be exposed to dangerous elements such as cave-ins, traffic and possible injuries caused by power and air tools.
Hiring will be done in accordance with Hammond City Ordinance #8620 as it pertains to the residency requirement.
Position will be posted internally from October 1, 2024 thru October 7, 2024. If the position is not filled internally, it will be held open for external applications an additional ten (10) days. The position will remain posted until filled or no more than ten days.
