Department Overview

bsr072.jpg
The Hammond Transit System (HTS) has five convenient bus routes that provide service throughout Hammond, Whiting, and Robertsdale. Limited service is provided to Munster, Highland, and the east side of Chicago.

Downtown Chicago and its south suburban communities, East Chicago, Gary, Griffith, and Highland are all reachable via transfer connections with South Shore, Pace, CTA, GPTC and ECT.

The Hammond Transit System is a municipal bus service of the City of Hammond. Its costs are paid in part through local, State and Federal taxes and in part by you, through your fares.

The schedules, fares and other information in this web site are subject to change. HTS does not assume responsibility for errors in timetables, nor for inconvenience or damage as a result of any bus delays or failure to make route connections.

Hammond Transit System does not operate on Saturdays, Sundays, New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

Riding the Bus

Buses will stop upon signal to driver at any Designated Hammond Transit Bus Stop, or at any corner along the route where it is safe to do so.

As the bus approaches, please wave your hand to let the driver know that you want to board the bus. Please have your fare ready for deposit as you board the vehicle. EXACT CHANGE IS REQUIRED. The driver has no change. If you need a transfer, please ask the driver upon boarding the vehicle.

If you have bags or packages, they must be stored either on the seat next to you, or on the floor in front of you. Bags and packages cannot be stored in the aisle. If you are traveling with a child in a stroller, the child CANNOT ride in the stroller while the bus is in motion. After taking your seat, please remove the child from the stroller and store the stroller behind a seat. As the bus approaches your stop, signal the operator by pulling the signal cord or by pressing the signal strip.

There is no eating, smoking or radio playing allowed on the buses. Shirts and shoes must be worn. Passengers with a disability who require a reasonable accommodation relating to this rule are exempt. Reasonable ADA Guideline accommodations may be requested of the driver of the vehicle.
