Sanitary District - Mission Statement

  • To collect, transmit, store, and treat sewage and storm water from the City of Hammond and the Town of Munster.
  • To transmit, store, and treat sewage from the customer municipalities and industrial users.
  • To discharge acceptable effluent into local watercourses and to dispose of residual solids, all in a cost-effective, safe and environmentally proper manner.

    The mission will be accomplished through the efforts of well trained, competent employees.

The following goals have been defined to help us accomplish our Mission:

OPERATIONS - Assure that all operations for which the HSD is responsible are carried out effectively, and that these operations are improved as new technologies and sound management principles dictate.

QUALITY - Assure that all government requirements are met, or exceeded, in the operation of the HSD.

HUMAN RESOURCES - Since our employees are our most valuable asset, hire the best people, train all employees to be the best they can be. Treat all employees with respect and create a climate in which the innovative ideas of all employees are considered and possibly put into action.

ENGINEERING, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT - On a planned basis develop projects for the acquisition of facilities and equipment and generate new processes and procedures which will improve the operations the HSD.

LEGAL - Retain competent legal council to protect the interests of the HSD and its customers.

FINANCIAL - Accomplish the mission of the HSD in a financially prudent manner, as reflected in the establishment of user charges which fairly reflect services received and the establishment of tax rates with an emphasis on controlling and minimizing cost.

COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLIC RELATIONS - Communicate effectively with the municipal governments of Hammond and Munster, citizens of the HSD, customer communities and industrial users in regard to problems, plans and successes of the HSD.

FLOODING - Assist and take actions to reduce or eliminate flooding in Hammond and Munster.

SAFETY - Protect the safety of the citizens, contractors, visitors and employees. Conduct a safety program for employees utilizing policies, procedures and training programs that ensure the safety of all employees and that strives to reduce injuries to no lost time.

ENVIRONMENT- Protect and enhance the water environment of the communities served.
