Street Closures this Sunday for Leon’s Triathlon

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, Hammond will again be hosting Leon’s “World’s Fastest” Triathlon.

The City of Hammond and the Indiana Department of Transportation have authorized the closures of Calumet Ave, Sheffield Ave, and 129th Street for this event.

DETAILS:

  • Calumet Ave. will be closed from 115th Street to 138th Street.
  • 129th Street will be closed from Calumet Avenue west toward the Indiana Toll Road.
  • Sheffield Ave. will be closed from 129th Street North to Wolf Lake Memorial Park.

We understand this event will affect grocery shopping at Strack & Van Til’s store located at Calumet and 119th Street. The pre-determined access route to Stracks will be from 115th and Calumet, west on 115th Street to Brown Ave, Brown Avenue south to 118th Street, 118th Street to the alley west of Calumet. Shoppers will be routed to 119th Street exiting only onto westbound 119th to Warwick north right turn to Brown Avenue, then east to Calumet Avenue at 115th.

We kindly ask that you please do not park vehicles on Sheffield or Calumet Avenues on the morning of Sunday, June 3 between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM. More than 500 athletes will be biking down these roads and we want to do everything possible to make sure the course is safe and secure to prevent accidents

*The Race Course will be closed between 7:30 AM and 11:30 AM*

FOR HOMES ON THE SOUTH END OF THE COURSE (BETWEEN 136TH AND GOSTLIN ST)

  • Homes surrounding Pulaski Park: Please proceed West and then South to S. Grover Avenue, to Gostlin Street
  • Homes East of Hohman Avenue: Please stay East of Hohman Avenue and proceed to 141st (or Gostlin Street to go South)
  • Homes West of Sheffield Avenue: Please stay west of Sheffield and proceed south on Wabash Avenue or S. Grover Avenue to Gostlin Street
  • Homes between Sheffield Avenue and Hohman Avenue: Please park on adjacent streets as access out will be restricted during the bike portion of the race.

*There will be no through traffic on Calumet Avenue from approximately 138th to 115th so if you need to go north, please proceed to Indianapolis Blvd.*

Leon’s Triathlon will be broadcast nationwide on NBC Sports Chicago. We appreciate your cooperation and invite you to come out and enjoy the race and show the nation how Northwest Indiana takes pride in its community.
