Street and Railroad Closings in Hammond

As the construction year winds down, numerous agencies are making repairs and getting ready for winter. Unfortunately, these agencies are doing work in the same period of time in our City, closing many major thoroughfares. “In order to keep our residents informed and able to navigate the City, the various closings are listed below,” stated Mayor McDermott.

IHB Railroad will be closed at 165th Street near McCook for two weeks from September 11 through the 22nd for railroad repairs.

Hohman Avenue southbound is closed for a City of Hammond job from Gostlin to Hoffman. We are hoping that the intersection of Gostlin and Hohman will open today if all goes well. The City of Hammond will also have Summer Street closed at 165th for repairs from October 16th through November 10th.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has Chicago Street closed for road repairs from Pine Avenue to Columbia Avenue through November 4th.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad will be making numerous repairs to their tracks through the end of October. Calumet Avenue at Fayette Street will be closed September 11 through the 15; 169th Street near Arizona from September26 through the 30th; Indianapolis Blvd. near Sherman Street from October 9th through the 14th; and, Columbia near Sherman Street from October 24th through the 28th.

CSX Railroad will have Sheffield Avenue closed near Hanover Street from October 2nd through the 13th.

“I’m know it’s an inconvenience for many of our residents”, commented Mayor McDermott. “However in the long run, Hammond will be better for it with smoother streets and railroad crossings.”
