Mayor McDermott Names New Corporation Counsel

Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. announces Kevin Smith has been named Corporation Counsel for the City of Hammond effective Monday, June 3rd. Mr. Smith graduated from DePaul University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in 1994 and from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991.

Mr. Smith is a founding partner in the law firm of Smith Sersic. He has been practicing law as a litigator and trial lawyer for 25 years. Kevin has served as attorney for the Hammond Park Department and the Hammond Port Authority and has counseled the City of Hammond for the last 15 years. “Kevin has advised me from day one in office,” stated Mayor McDermott. “He will be a tremendous asset to the City as Corporation Counsel.”

Mr. Smith is a lifelong resident of Hammond and continues to be active in the community and with his family. He is an active member of the American Association for Justice, a sustaining member of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, and a member of the Indiana Municipal Lawyers Association. He is admitted to practice law in the state and federal courts in Indiana and Illinois as well as before the Seventh Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Smith replaces Kristina Kantar who was sworn in today as Lake County Superior Court Judge in Gary. “Kris has done an excellent job for the City”, stated Mayor McDermott. “She will be sorely missed.”
