Local bus service is scheduled to return to Hammond on May 27, the day after Memorial Day, when Gary Public Transportation Corp. unveils its new Lakeshore South route.

The new Lakeshore South route will serve Hammond stops such as Purdue University Calumet and the Walmart on 169th Street. It will then head on to shopping centers and medical centers in the neighboring communities of Munster and Highland.

May 27 is also the day the Tri-City Connection route will be renamed Lakeshore Connection, with significant changes to its East Chicago route and stops.

The schedules and routes for the Lakeshore South and Lakeshore Connection are now available at the GPTC routes Web page at http://www.gptcbus.com/routes.htm.

The timetables posted there are slightly different than earlier versions, due to tweaking that took place after test bus runs conducted during the last several weeks, according to GPTC.
