Festival of the Lakes hosts Senior Day and Special Person’s Day

The 14th annual Festival of the Lakes ensures everyone is included in the event’s fun and excitement by offering both Senior Day and Special Person’s Day to the community.

Senior Day, held on Friday, July 21 from 10am to 1pm under the Beer Garden tent, invites seniors aged 55 and older to come enjoy an afternoon of dancing, a free lunch provided by California Donuts, and music by Pete Carlo Three.

Special Person’s Day, held on Saturday, July 22 from 10am to noon, allows those with special needs and their families to enjoy free rides from Modern Midways and lunch provided by California Donuts and Pepsi.

Both days are free and offer goody bags to everyone in attendance.

State Health Insurance Assistance Program sponsors both events, not only by providing friendly volunteers to help answer questions, but also by providing free glucose and blood pressure screenings from Oak Street Health, Medicare outreach materials for Senior Day, and outreach materials and fun giveaways for Special Person’s Day.

SHIP Area Manager Christel Snow believes it is important for Festival to continue offering these programs to seniors and the disabled population in the community, because it offers guidance and support to those who may not actively seek it. “You would be surprised at the number of people we have helped provide preventative services to in the past,” she said. According to Snow, both Senior Day and Special Person’s Day have been events many seniors and disabled community members and their families look forward to each year, noting the usual attendance rate of 350 people. “These programs are important – I’m really happy Mayor McDermott has kept them going,” Snow said.

Both Senior Day and Special Person’s Day will take place at Wolf Lake Memorial Park, 2324 Calumet Avenue in Hammond, Indiana.
