Chili cook-off to raise money for kids battling cancer

The third annual chili cook-off tailgate party to benefit the Joseph Betustak Jr. Memorial Foundation Inc. is Sunday at Hammond FOP Lodge 51, 7527 Kennedy Ave.

The event begins at 11 a.m. and features about 17 different chili recipes. During the cook-off, the game between the Chicago Bears and the Carolina Panthers will be shown on a big screen television.

Proceeds from the event will benefit children with cancer, said Joe Betustak Sr., president of the foundation. Betustak’s son, Hammond Detective Sgt. Joe Betustak Jr., was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2005 and died a year later.

In addition to the cook-off, every May a “Joe B. Memorial Bike Run and Concert” is held to raise funds for families of specific region youngsters battling cancer.
