Holiday happenings in Hammond

Get your friends, neighbors and relatives out for the Hammond Holiday Parade on Sat. Dec. 3, 10 a.m., down Indianapolis Blvd from 175th street to 169th street. Participants include local high school bands, South Side Baseball mascot Southpaw, and, of course, Santa!

Haven House, a domestic violence shelter in Hammond, is collecting new teddy bears, toys and twin size blankets this holiday season. Donations can be dropped off at the following locations until Dec. 23: all Hammond Fire Stations; the Hammond Police Dept., 509 Douglas St.; the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Ave.; the Hammond Recycling Dept., 625 Conkey St. Checks can also be sent directly to P.O. The last day for yard waste pick up is the week of Dec. 12. All bags, weighing no more than 50 pounds, should be placed on parkways on garbage days in brown, non-biodegradable bags. Call (219) 853-6433 with questions.

The Hammond Academy of Science and Technology is accepting applications until Jan. 30, 2012 for incoming 6th graders for the fall of 2012. Come out for the 2011 Senior Christmas Party on Wednesday, Dec. 14 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hammond Civic Center. The event includes lunch and a fun performance from Those Funny Little People. Tickets are on sale now for $20 per person at the Hammond Civic Center. Tickets will not be sold after Dec. 7 or at the door on the day of the event.

Join us for the 69th year of the Orak Shrine Circus at the Hammond Civic Center! This long-standing family tradition begins on Thursday, Dec. 1 through Sun., Dec. 4.  Tickets are on sale now at the Civic Center and Strack & Van Til’s Supermarkets for $14, $18 or $20 each, cash only. Don’t miss the annual Hammond Holiday favorite, “A Fabulous ‘50s Christmas” at the Towle Theater from Dec. 2-4, 9-11 & 16-18. Tickets are $15. Fridays and Saturday show time is 8 p.m. Sundays, 2 p.m. Call (219) 937-8780 for reservations.
