January Fun in Hammond!

Hammond Reads is currently holding its 10th Annual Essay Contest.  Deliver your entry to any Hammond Public Library location or the School City of Hammond Administration Building at 41 Williams Street up until 4pm.  Call Linda at 219.931.5100 x310 for details on essay guidelines and topic.

Open auditions for a benefit performance of “The Vagina Monologues” will be held on January 9 at 4pm at Beatniks on Conkey, 418 Conkey Street.  Proceeds from this show will benefit Haven House and the “V” Day Foundation.  Call 219.853.0848.

As a show of your appreciation and support, on January 15 at 7pm, Beatniks on Conkey will celebrate their third anniversary with a show full of skits, songs and excerpts from upcoming plays and shows.  Any size donation will be accepted as admission, and refreshments are included.  All are invited.  Call 219.852.0848 or visit beatniksonconkey.com.

Come and celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 17 by taking part in Hammond’s Annual Candlelight March.  The March will begin in the parking lot of Hammond City Hall, 5925 S. Calumet, at 6:45 am and proceed down Highland Street taking a right on Sohl and ending at the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 S. On January 22 & 23, join us at the Jean Shepherd Community Center for the 27th Annual Hammond Outdoor Sports Show.  The show runs from 9am-5pm on Saturday and 9am– 4pm on Sunday.  Tickets are only $5, children under 12 are free.  Free door prizes every 30 minutes, free parking and free shuttle buses.  This is one of Hammond’s most popular winter shows, boasting free seminars and a fish fry.  The kids can play Wii fishing, minnow races, check out the bobber pond or fish for a real trout.  Cabela’s will do a kids fishing seminar on Saturday and a fly tying class on Sunday.  Call 219.554.0155 for directions.  Visit gohammond.com and click on the Hammond Outdoor Sports Show icon for a list of seminar topics and show vendors.

Also on Saturday, January 23, the Hammond Civic Center is hosting the WWE at 1pm.  Tickets are still available at the Hammond Civic Center box office (call 219.853.6378) or ticketmaster.com.  Some of the talent competing at this show is Rey Mysterio, Edge, Kane and Jack Swagger.  Wrestling fans will also know Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, Chris Masters and many more.  Tickets are available for as low as $15.  Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.
